Dry Stone construction : Ancient Art and Environmental Technique.

Recognition of the dry stone technique as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO.

An ancient technique widely used throughout the Pyrenees, the art of dry stone construction consists of stacking stones without using other construction materials, except for dry earth on some occasions.

These techniques have created different types of human habitats, as well as structures for agriculture and livestock, which have shaped unique landscapes, with rural communities and professionals in the construction sector being the current custodians of this historic cultural heritage element.

Always in perfect harmony with the environment, these techniques are an example of a balanced relationship between humans and the protection of nature.

In addition, it requires great skill and knowledge on the part of the workers who carry it out, which is why it is considered an art that can contribute to professional insertion, the promotion of sustainable tourism, the application of nature-based solutions to natural risks and the protection of biodiversity.

The Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu, where dry stone and constructions made using this system are the subject of conservation, organises annually, in collaboration with other institutions (Associació Gremi dels Margers de Catalunya – AGMC / Museu dels Camins de la Vall de Siarb), courses for the training of professionals in the dry stone technique.

The Pyrenees Working Community (CTP) has launched the 2024/2026 cross-border PETRA Project, the objective of which is the use, enhancement and promotion of dry stone techniques in the trans-Pyrenean area based on knowledge for correct management and its cultural and tourist use. It has a series of partners in the cross-border area, including the Institut per al Desenvolupament i la Promoció de l’Alt Pirineu i Aran (IDAPA).
